I wanted to talk with you all about how we capture your engagement and wedding photography through both film and digital photography. Yes, you saw that…FILM like actual rolls of film!
Last year I actually wrote an article for RangeFinder Magazine on why I am falling in love with film again! You can get all the details here!
I really appreciate the aesthetic of film. The natural grain, shadows, and highlights are breathtaking. The vintage feel of it brings an additional classic feel to our couples’ photographs. This is also how I was first introduced to the art of photography, so working with film again is very nostalgic for me.
I also appreciate the fact that film really makes me slow down and focus on the details. You are not getting instant gratification from film like you do in digital. Additionally, there are 16 frames (photographs) on 1 roll of film, so as a photographer and an artist I want to make sure that I am getting perfect photographs each time I press the shutter button.
So what does this process entail? Like digital photography, I need to know 4 factors. ISO, Shutter Speed, Fstop, and where the light is. As a natural light photographer, I need to pay attention to the direction of the light vs where my couples are. The other three factors need to be synchronized correctly to produce the photograph that I want, for my couples.
As a couple, your job is to look amazing and be in love. As the photographer, I am making sure your love is captured in the photographs, making sure there is no harsh lighting on your face, the lighting is even and bright enough to capture through the camera and on to the film.
“Now Victoria, you mentioned film makes you slow down but how do you accomplish this on an actual wedding day?”
Glad you asked lol! I balance between using film and digital on the wedding day. With film, I tend to use it for couples portraits, details, and a few moments during the ceremony and reception. I first capture moments on digital so I know that I have those photographs, and then we bring in the film. As I continue to adjust and move forward with film, my goal is to use less digital and more film!
I hope this gives you a little more insight into our photography process. Until next time!
